THE WESTERN OPEN

The Cialis Western Open

2006 Western Open Champion

Trevor Immelman won the 103rd Western Open on July 9, 2006. He did so with rounds of 69-66-69-67=271, 13 under per par, holding off a back nine charge by three-time champion Tiger Woods and Matthew Goggin by two strokes. Immelman clinched his first PGA Tour victory with birdies on three of his final four holes, none more important than the 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole . The 26 year-old then headed back to Orlando where his wife is expecting their first child. He took home $900,000 for the victory in the final year of the Cialis Western Open. The event will change its name next season to the BMW Championship and will be played the week following Labor Day as the final qualifying site for the Tour Championship.

First conducted by the Western Golf Association in 1899, the Western Open is the oldest tournament on the regular PGA Tour and the second oldest in the nation. Only the U.S. Open, started in 1895, is older. Since the first championship in 1899, the WGA has held the Western Open annually except in 1900 and during the war years of 1918 and 1943-45. It has been played at Cog Hill since 1991.

A dazzling list of champions has taken the Western Open during its more than 100 years, including Walter Hagen, Tommy Armour, Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Billy Casper, Tom Watson, Scott Hoch, and Tiger Woods.
